Biking the beach…
….is best on Sunset Beach! After my initial post-Matthew visit to Sunset, I went back to get a better look of the entire island and the best way to do that was to do it by bicycle. Here is the route that I took on this particular ride:
You can see photos of the damage done to the beach by viewing this blog post. This particular ride took me up and down the length of the beach and then inland where I discovered a wonderful little ‘oasis’ in the marsh.
There is a fairly new road on Sunset Beach called Riverside Dr that runs along the marsh on one side and the river that feeds the inland canals on the other. On this road will be built approximately 60 homes on a very narrow strip of land bordering the river. (The project itself is a discussion for another time!) The road will be (is) a private road but at this stage of the development, it is at least accessible to anyone. About halfway down the road, the developer built a series of marshwalks and picnic/rest areas on the dry ‘islands’ in the marsh. It’s really quite an extraordinary spot! Many of the photos that you’ll see here were taken in that spot. If you’re not familiar with the particular spot, I’ve attached a map giving you a better idea. If you do have the opportunity to visit this area, please remember that this entire area is in the middle of a wonderfully pristine area of nature. Be mindful of the effort that someone expended to make this as beautiful as it is. Don’t bring any trash in…and take out any that you find!
Here is the gallery of photos from this bike ride. Hope you enjoy.
