Our recent spate of luscious weather this February gave the perfect opportunity for biking & hiking along Sunset Beach and down to Bird Island. Sunset Beach is the ideal spot for biking the beach. It’s wide beach and its hard packed sand lend themselves perfectly for riding a bicycle. The island itself is small, the smallest of the Brunswick County islands at just over 4 miles from east to west. Add to that, the desolation of the last 2 miles along the western end of the island leading to Bird Island adds another dimension to discovering the beauty of the island.
Bird Island, if you are not aware, is undeveloped and will remain that way in perpetuity. It is controlled and managed by the N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve. The dunes along the shoreline and the maritime forest along the inside of the dunes encompass nearly 1500 acres along the coastline of NC down to the border of SC and the Little River Inlet. Coupled with the Kindred Spirit Mailbox; a beautiful, marked nature trail leading you into the forest and to the interior shore; and the towering dunes at the far west end of the island, you have an ideal environment to explore the beauty of our shoreline.
My recent bike ride took mr down to the jetty at which point I continued on foot back into the maritime forest and into the dunes for some of the most spectacular views you will find along Our carolina Shore.
